Democratic Forum of Germans in Vatra Dornei
DFDR Vatra Dornei represents the interests of the German minority and its friends in the picturesque spa town of Vatra Dornei (German: Dorna-Watra) and throughout the Dorna Valley. As an integral part of the Regional Forum of Old Romania & Bukovina, the Forum works to preserve Bukovina-German identity, traditions of architectural and spa heritage, the mother tongue and interethnic dialogue in south-western Bukovina.
In the Dorna Valley, the local forum connects the memory of the history of the Bukovina Germans with contemporary cultural and community work. The spa town and its surroundings form the regional focus of its activities

History of the Forum
The presence of the Bukovina Germans in the Dorna Valley dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. After Bukovina was annexed by the Habsburg Monarchy, forest workers from Zips and Upper Austria, miners, smelter workers, and craftsmen settled in the surrounding valleys, such as Jakobeny (Iacobeni) and Dorna-Watra, to exploit the rich ore deposits and the timber industry. With the development of the mineral springs, Dorna-Watra flourished into a spa town under the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the end of the 19th century onward. German doctors, engineers, hotel staff, and civil servants played a significant role in the town's growth. The architectural landscape, with its characteristic spa buildings and villas, still reflects this glorious era today
Following the historical upheavals of the 20th century, the Bukovina Germans who remained in the region re-established the local forum in Vatra Dornei in 1990. It builds on the rich history of the valley and serves as a meeting place for young and old

Easter traditions, summer festivities, the St. Martin's Day parade, and atmospheric Advent and Christmas celebrations bring together members and friends of German culture in the Dorna Valley. Regular meetings are held in the association's premises, where German-language newspapers are read, memories are shared, and historical accounts of the Bukovina Germans are discussed
The Vatra Dornei DFD (DFD Vatra Dornei) actively participates in the cultural highlights of the spa town, such as the Vatra Dornei Municipal Cultural Days and regional music and dance festivals in Bukovina.
