As the largest local forum of the Old Romania & Bukovina Regional Forum, the DFD Bucharest brings together members of different generations. From its headquarters in the Friedrich Schiller Cultural Center, it collaborates with educational, cultural, religious, and minority institutions in the capital

History of the Forum
In the presence of Ingmar Brandsch from Mediaș, Michael Gross from Sibiu, and Horst Schuller from Brașov, as delegates of the Democratic Forum of Romanian Germans, which had been established in Sighișoara, the founding of the initiative group of the Democratic Forum of Germans from the capital city took place on Friday, December 29, 1989, in the parish hall of the Bucharest Evangelical Church. The message of the Democratic Forum of Romanian Germans was read aloud, and the initiative group of Bucharest Germans subsequently endorsed it. After lively discussions about the necessity of reorganizing the Romanian Germans and about the tasks of the Bucharest Germans, a nine-member working group was elected: City Pastor Günter Ambrosi received the mandate to represent the Bucharest Germans in the Council of the National Salvation Front
The first General Assembly of the DFDR (Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania) took place on March 3, 1990, in Sibiu (Hermannstadt). There, the establishment of three regional forums – Transylvania, Banat, and Old Romania – was decided. Northern Transylvania and Bukovina were added later. The first DFDR board consisted of 19 members: seven from Transylvania, seven from Banat, and five from Bucharest. The Bucharest representatives were primarily responsible for maintaining contact with government agencies. From the beginning, two men were involved who would later play important roles in both the Bucharest and Old Romania forums: Dr. Klaus Fabritius and Nikolaus Kleininger
The Bucharest Forum was initially located in the German School, now the German Goethe College. Robert Schwartz, who played a role in the Forum and its early political bodies, also served as its director from January to September 1990
In the autumn of 1990, the Forum moved to the Friedrich Schiller Cultural Center. The centrally located and easily accessible premises offered suitable facilities and facilitated closer contact with members. The Bucharest local Forum's headquarters remain in the Schiller House at 15 Batiștei Street to this day
The "Karpatenshow" brass band of the Schiller House and the German Forum was re-established in 1997 by Hans Groza. It continued the tradition of the brass band of the same name, which had existed in the 1970s and 1980s under the direction of Emil Franz and Andreas Bretz. The orchestra provided musical accompaniment for events organised by the DFD Bucharest, the Schiller House, and the German community, and also performed at regional and national gatherings. The "Karpatenshow" has not performed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020
In 2007, the 50th anniversary of the Schiller Cultural Center was celebrated together with forum members. On this occasion, actors from Timișoara performed Bertolt Brecht's "The Threepenny Opera."
Since 2007, the Forum has been supported by a cultural manager from the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) in Stuttgart; later, a young assistant joined the team. This collaboration made projects for young people particularly possible
2009 marked the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the German newspaper in Bucharest. The newspaper, formerly called "Neuer Weg" (New Way), is now published as the "Allgemeine Deutsche Zeitung für Rumänien" (ADZ) (General German Newspaper for Romania). An exhibition organised for the anniversary commemorated the significant role of the German-language press in the life of the German community
The German Goethe College looks back on approximately 275 years of educational tradition in 2026. With German-language instruction from kindergarten through elementary school to high school graduation, it is a central institution for the German community in Bucharest. The college particularly helps its youngest members to preserve and develop their German linguistic and cultural identity and pass it on to the next generation
Activities and priorities
Cooperation with the Friedrich Schiller Cultural Center
The Schiller House is the headquarters and a key cultural partner of the DFD Bucharest. Together, they organise exhibitions, readings, lectures, concerts, and events for Easter, Christmas, Carnival, and other occasions. This collaboration provides suitable spaces and connects the Forum with the German-language cultural life of the capital
German Goethe College and Youth Work
The DFD Bucharest (DFD Bucharest) collaborates with the German Goethe College and other German-language educational institutions. Children and young people participate in the forum's festivals, cultural programmes, and projects. German-language education and community cultural activities help the youngest members of Bucharest's German community to preserve and actively develop their linguistic and cultural identity
‘Karpatenshow’ brass band
The "Carpathian Show," re-established in 1997, continued the tradition of the brass band of the same name from the 1970s and 1980s. For many years, it accompanied events of the Forum, the Schiller House, and the German community, and also performed outside of Bucharest. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the orchestra has not performed. It is therefore documented as a former cultural group of the DFD Bucharest and not presented as a currently active ensemble
Institutional and social cooperation
The DFD Bucharest maintains relationships with the German Embassy, the Evangelical Church A.B., Catholic institutions, and other organisations within the German community. Its social partners include, among others, the social services centre run by the Diakonie (Protestant social welfare organisation) and the German Catholic Aid Association
Exhibitions, Culture and Literature
Together with the Schiller House and other partners, the Forum supports exhibitions, musical performances, readings, and the dissemination of German-language literature and publications about the German community. The individual titles published or co-sponsored by the Forum are documented in the "Publications" section
Community and Future
[The text abruptly ends here, so the translation stops as well.] In light of demographic changes, working with children, young people, and families is of particular importance. The Forum is therefore further expanding its connections with schools, churches, cultural institutions, media, government, and businesses. The goal is to keep German community life in Bucharest vibrant and to attract new generations to the language, culture, and history of the Romanian Germans
Cultural groups
Eichenwälder Music, Song and Dance Group
Children and young people from Bucharest have performed since 2025 as the Eichenwälder Music, Song and Dance Group, led by Prof. Camelia Popa and Prof. Rodica Chiriac. With German music, singing and folk dance, the group enriches the Forum’s cultural life and represents the community at regional and interethnic events.
Wahnsinn Theatre Group
The Wahnsinn theatre group was co-founded in 2023 and is directed by German-speaking actor Axel Moustache. It brings creative impulses to German-language theatre and gives young participants a lively path into language, performance and shared cultural work.
