Democratic Forum of Germans in Bacău
The Democratic Forum of Germans in Bacău represents the interests of the German community in Bacău County and the surrounding area. It provides a framework for cultivating German language, culture and traditions and for an active community life in the region.
The Local Forum is part of the Regional Forum of Old Romania & Bukovina and brings its members together through local community, cultural and social activities.

History of the Forum
The Bacău branch of the Democratic Forum of Germans was founded in October 1990, initially as a Zonal Forum for Bacău and Neamț counties, by an initiative group comprising Paul Kappel, Eduard Wagner, Herta Weissmann, Friedrich Martin Peck and Viorica Reichert.
In 1992, the Forum became affiliated to the Regional Forum of Old Romania.
The organisation was recognised as a legal entity in September 2002. The founding members of the new organisation were Friedrich Martin Peck, Gertrud Susanna Cinca and Mihai Marinel Todasca. Over the years, the Chairs were Paul Kappel, Waldemar Weissmann, Friedrich Martin Peck, Gertrud Susanna Cinca and Mihai Marinel Todasca. Previously, the Forum had operated successively in several premises made available to it on a temporary basis.
Since 2002, the Forum has had its own premises, a two-room flat at 4 Miron Costin Street, Block 4, Entrance A, Flat 4.
The Bacău branch of the Democratic Forum of Germans had 71 members on January 1, 2010, including 10 children under the age of 18. According to the bylaws, there is no distinction between full and supporting members, so there are no separate lists
Activities and priorities
General activities
Besides administrative tasks, monthly activities and meetings of the Executive Board take place. The monthly meetings also include discussions and updates regarding the organisation's ongoing activities, relationships with other local and central administrative units, current issues affecting forum members, and the planning of future actions. Board meetings are used to make decisions regarding the forum's activities and to prepare for subsequent events. Cultural activities funded by the state budget, held on various occasions such as Easter, Mother's Day, German Unity Day, and St. Nicholas Day, are accompanied by cultural programmes specifically prepared for these occasions. Forum members and various external partners participate in these programmes. These programmes take place at the forum's headquarters as well as at other locations, depending on the participants and the programme's content
Principal achievements
Since its founding, the Bacău Forum has carried out various activities independently or in cooperation with other organisations (Leonhardt Foundation, NICU ENEA School, etc.), participated in the activities of other local organisations, and attended events in other towns: 1993 and 1994: German language courses in Augsburg, organised and financed by the Landsmannschaft der Bukovina Germans (led by Dr. Reinhold Bartha), in which the young members of the then-Central Forum Bacău participated. 1998: Exhibition of documents and pictures entitled "Heim ins Reich" (Home to the Reich), in cooperation with the Süd-Ostdeutsche Zeitung Augsburg, represented by editor-in-chief Alfred Geier. In cooperation with the Leonhardt Foundation, a theatre group from Iași performed a puppet show in German. Exhibitions are organised annually in which children are inspired by German customs and traditions at Easter through their artwork; also an ecology forum (for 4 years) and summer camps with German lessons (for 4 years). Founding of the German folk music group DUO-ZWEI; performances at events in Bacau, Bistritz, and Tulcea, as well as on television 1TV Bacau; participation in the Day of Minorities, organised by the Bacau Prefecture; annual joint programmes with the NICU ENEA Bacau school (where German is taught as a foreign language): Carnival at the school with the participation of Forum members and St. Nicholas Day celebrations, Easter, and Mother's Day at the Forum headquarters with student participation; German language courses (three years) for Forum members and other interested parties. The classes were taught by German teachers from Bacau who sympathize with the German Forum. Participation with traditional German dishes in an exhibition of national minority cuisine organised by the Bacau Prefecture in Bacau County; development of a history of the German population in Romania; participation in local elections with our own candidates
Projects for the next three to five years
In addition to our now traditional cultural activities, we plan to: organise a trip to the Saxon fortified churches near Brașov, expand the Forum's German folk music group, participate in joint activities with neighbouring German Forums, further cultivate our partnerships with the Leonhardt Foundation and the NICU ENEA School, and create our own website
Other activities
Production of a DVD documentary about a former memorial to the German soldiers who fell in the First World War battles at Crăciun (near Râmnicu Sărat).
